‘This Isn’t Going To Happen’: Reality Sets In For Minnesota Couples Hoping To Get Married Amid COVID-19

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It’s the time of year when summer wedding season should be in full swing, but the COVID-19 pandemic has sent Minnesota couples scrambling to make new plans. WCCO takes a look at what changing restrictions for celebrations will mean in the months ahead.

Makaela Egan remembers the optimism she felt just a few months ago. After two years of planning for 200 people to celebrate their big day at Aria in Minneapolis.

“At first I was like there’s no way this is going into June it’s going to be fine,” Egan said. “We are bummed we can’t have the day we’ve been dreaming about for two years — or, at least, I have. He just thinks we’re already married.”

As time went by, her fiancee and NFL player J.C. Hassenauer had to help his bride-to-be face reality.

“End of May we’re like, we have to tell everyone this isn’t going to happen,” Egan said.

Instead, they’ll have an intimate ceremony somewhere else this month and the big party next summer.

“I really think it’s important for people to save their date and have it be special for them and not put off getting married for a whole year,” Sarah Trotter, wedding planner with Lasting Impressions, said.

Sarah Trotter plans 50 weddings a year. COVID-19 has postponed 30 of them. “We’re just trying to stay on top of all the different ordinances,” she said.

Now, church ceremonies can be at 50% capacity in Minnesota. But receptions at indoor venues can only be at 25%.

“I think it’s definitely given people more of a positive outlook on what the summer is going to look like and what they can plan for,” Trotter said.

Trotter is still hopeful the rescheduled weddings for fall and winter will go on as planned. But as for Egan and Hassenauer, they’ll be ready to party a year from now.

“We want to be married. That’s the most important thing. Why wait another year when we can still have the day celebrate each other and move forward with it,” Egan said.

Trotter expects the pandemic will have a long-lasting effect on the wedding industry as a whole, as people plan for smaller weddings and re-evaluate their priorities.

Wedding insurance and COVID-19

Who could’ve seen a global pandemic coming, right? Certainly a situation difficult to predict and is still something that we are all getting used to. Nobody likes uncertainty, that’s for sure. And we can add a list of reasons why wedding insurance has such an important role.

Although the pandemic is an unprecedented situation and cancellation insurance policies are not being offered at this time of “ongoing crisis”, wedding insurance should be on the top of the list in the planning process for couples in the future.

Why? Because things happen, life happens. From bad weather to an illness, these are some scenarios that a wedding insurance can help with. For the couples going through the planning process, Consumers Advocate researched the best wedding insurance companies so you don’t have to take time from what is important. This can be a time to look for options, know what you need and want from a wedding insurance for your special day.

HOW TO LET YOUR GUESTS KNOW YOU ARE POSTPONING YOUR WEDDING DUE TO COVID-19

COVID-19-Wedding-Planning_0246.jpg

My life as a wedding planner has always been about juggling. Juggling multiple clients, todo lists, deadlines and appointments and I have always found the controlled chaos of wedding planning an environment that I thrive on. I am organized, detailed and I do my best to be on top of all communication for my clients. After starting Lasting Impressions 13 years ago I could give you hundreds of reasons and examples on why I feel having a wedding planner would save you not only stress but also money while planning your wedding.
Here are just a few….
1. Experience of an expert
2. Planners will fight for your wedding vision and keep everything on track.
3. Planners will save you tons of money by not making costly mistakes
4. Gives Valuable Advice in tricky situations

Covid-19

But as I sit here and write this post we are in unprecedented times. We are currently living in the middle of a “Stay at Home Order” For the Covid-19 Virus and my days are not filled with sending over floral ideas, updated budgets and Beautiful images. My days are filled talking to our couples about the virus, the information we have (and dont have) and just trying to be a shoulder for them to lean on and a friend to call. We are all in this together!!

As a wedding planner I am reconfiguring and rescheduling not only tons of weddings.. but also 3 weeks worth of meetings that have been planned and now need to be re-planned for when the government lifts the restrictions. The reason I bring this up is.. This is my job and This is why I have a job!! I am here to assist couples not only with the little questions about guest count, cake flavor, bridesmaids gifts, but also with the big decisions like postponing their wedding. We are here to spend hours rescheduling, reworking contracts, redoing timelines so that you get to have the wedding you dreamt about.

If there was ever a time to hire a planner, it’s now. “You’re not paying a planner for when things get rosy, you’re paying a planner for when shit hits the fan. It has, and we’re ready and here to advocate for our clients and future couples.”

To say the last week has been a whirlwind or a nightmare would be an understatement! A week ago we knew that COVID-19 was going to impact  our  lives, but never did I imagine a week later that we would have had to postpone/cancel 6 weddings for April and early May!!

There have been TONS of resources that have been developed in the last month to assist vendors and couples navigate these unfamiliar waters of moving dates around, etc. One thing I wanted to quickly address is what is the best way to let your guests know that you are moving your wedding date when the invitations have went out.

I asked my friends over at Paper Rock Scissors on what they recommended and here is what Liz had to say.

Your website needs to act as the best friend in this situation… just keeping that home page as the hub of the latest information for those guests who are wondering what is happening with these events.

The actual announcement itself could be a simple email out to your guests, a designed email that you send out to your guests or a 2nd mailing that could be sent out to guests.”

2021… Was a whirlwind to say the least, but here we are at the end of the year feeling thankful for all our amazing couples that weathered the last two years with us!! A year ago there was so much uncertainty about weddings and events and while covid does not look like it is going away anytime soon, I can tell you that love won in 2021! We were able to celebrate and finally couples were able to walk down the aisle! I wanted to close out this whirlwind of a year with one of our favorite families and weddings of 2021!!

Madeleine and Jared were married in September at The Basilica of St. Mary with their reception at the White Bear Yacht Club (one of our favorite venues!!) I was lucky enough to have planned both of Madeleine’s sisters weddings so when I got a text from her Dad telling me that Madeleine and Jared were engaged I was so excited to get started!!!!!! They knew they wanted to get married in 2021 and we would need to get planning right away to find the perfect venue.

They wanted something near the water and loved the idea of a tent wedding, I instantly thought that the White Bear Yacht Club would be the perfect fit for them!! Not only is the Yacht Club a beautiful location, but it was also great for the elegant and timeless vision Madeleine had for her wedding decor. Monogramed Bars, Hydrangeas, Embroidered Napkins, Hanging Floral… Not a detail was missed! And the weather… well it could not have been better! We got the best weather of September and it made for a magical day!

It’s hard to believe that this winter wedding was already just about a year ago… and It was the last wedding that we did before COVID took over!! But enough about that, lets talk all about Marlee and Todd’s beautiful wedding! Minnesota in February can be unpredictable, but luckily for us the weather was cooperating very well and created the perfect backdrop for this Leap Day Winter Wedding! With most of their guests flying in from the East Coast Marlee and Todd wanted to make everything easy for their guests and wanted to have a really fun party.

We started planning this wedding just 7 months before the big day and the top priorities were booking our amazing Photographer, Laura Rae Photography and booking a band that would keep everyone on the dance floor all night.. and that was Elan Artists!! The rest of the plans came together through numerous emails and a few trips back to Minnesota for planning meetings! The decor was modern mixed with a classic and traditional element. Round and Long guest tables created a unique atmosphere and also created a large dance floor for our HORA!! The room looked warm and inviting and all of the guests did dance all night long!
